Garth & Bev - Premiers on RTE Two!
November 20, 2009 at 9:48 pm by Gary Timpson
Nature has all the Answers!
Garth & Bev will be premiering on RTE Two on Monday the 23rd of November at 2.50pm and will run for 3 weeks.
There’ll be fun and laughs and squabbles and mess… but at the heart of Garth & Bev lies the idea that Nature, in all its brilliance, is the primary source of invention, creativity and problem solving. Whatever amazing inventions we humans can come with, most often we will find that nature got their first!
Our central characters are Garth (7) and his sister Bev (5), and just like our audience, they are active, curious, adventure seeking and always ready to learn something new! The only difference is that they live in a village long, long ago. Instead of TV’s, PSPs and bikes for amusement, Garth and Bev have pebbles, log boats and village races. And above all, they have nature!
Garth and Bev live in harmony with nature and pay it the utmost respect. The rhythm of their life is dictated by the seasons. Nature is powerful but it is also their friend and teacher. They learn about nature as they live and play in it. Garth and Bev solve problems by exploring and experimenting with the world around them… and then they find that their discoveries are often a little bit like the discoveries other people are making elsewhere – people who are trying to invent things
“…in another time and place…!”
As well as being inquisitive, imaginative kids, Garth and Bevin are also time travellers! Their Grandfather Lir is a mystical druid who conjures up a magical swirling time spiral, transporting an excited Garth and Bev through time and space.
Just at their Eureka moment, surprised inventors and creators throughout history are visited by two young kids with lots of questions! And these inventors and creators have solved a problem very similar to Garth and Bev’s! As often as not, Nature provides the link for solving the puzzle.
As Grandfather Lir likes to remind them – ‘Nature has all the answers!’

Hasan Everywhere
November 6, 2009 at 2:11 pm by Andrew Kavanagh
Kavaleer’s latest short film ‘Hasan Everywhere’ wrapped production yesterday just in time for its screening at the Corona Cork International Film Festival this Saturday.
The film details the friendship between an Israeli novelist (Dorit Rabinyan) and a Palestinian artist (Hasan Hourani) from their first meeting in New York in the winter of 2002 to 6th August 2003, when Hasan tragically drowned near the Port of Jaffa. The film is inspired by Dorit’s eulogy to Hasan ‘The Exile’s Return’ which was published in the Guardian in April 2003 and Hasan’s own unfinished childrens book, the eponymous ‘Hasan Everywhere’. This highly personal film is the culmination of two years work and research, and the end of a journey that began for me in October 2007 in New York, and took me to Tel Aviv, Ramallah and London to meet Hasan’s friends and family. It has been an extraordinary privilege to make this film and I have loved every minute of the experience. If you can make it along, the world premiere takes place at the Irish Film Board Screening, 4PM Saturday 7th November at the Grand Opera House in Cork City.

Cork on Ice
November 19, 2008 at 4:52 pm by Ciara Gillan
Check out our fab new animation for this year’s Cork on Ice. Animated by the wonderful James Carroll (who’s now travelling the far reaches of Korea!), this little safety video was a joy to put together. The idea behind it was to recreate the 1950’s newsreel style clips. Big shout out goes to Riana McKeith who’s technical wizardary was the magic behind the sound effects, amongst other things. Enjoy!

Blended Goodness
September 16, 2008 at 6:40 pm by Gary Timpson
I came across a brilliant short the other day… Check it out (There is a better quality video on the Big Buck Bunny website but it takes ages to download):
One of the more interesting things about the production is that it was developed entirely with the free open source 3D animation package - Blender. I haven’t used Blender but from what I can see the interface looks pretty similar to other 3D animation suites that animators will be familiar with. And, as you can see above, the results look fantastic. Check out the Movie gallery for more Blender animation. There are also video tutorials on the website and someone has also posted tutorials on YouTube.
